P.Whitfield Consulting was established in 2016 to offer independent advice and strategic direction for operational & safety aspects of major transport projects.

Peter Whitfield MICE B.Eng (Hons) is a Chartered Engineer with 29 years experience and is a member of the Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation Road Safety Panel.

. Peter specialises in operational road safety governance and design standards. In his previous employment at Atkins he chaired the Highways Working Group as Head of Profession. At Atkins, Peter led research projects advising the DfT, National Audit Office and Transport for London on standards and safety issues, including development of government policy in response to the EC Directive on Road Infrastructure Safety Management. Peter has also delivered the safety assessment for Smart Motorways valued at over £1bn on the M25, M62, M4/M5, M6 and M1 , chairing the Project Safety Groups and developing hazard logs and Safety Case Reports. 

Prior to joining Atkins, Peter lead a national safety team at the Highways Agency and chaired the Technical Project Board that approved publication of new national safety and highway design standards.. He was also the principal authoriser of geometric departures from standards and was responsible for the corporate governance of related safety policy.
